Anne of Cleves

Book Description
Publication Date: July 19, 2013

It is winter 1539. King Henry VIII is galloping through the night to Rochester to meet a young woman. Just arrived in England from Germany, Anne of Cleves is destined to become his fourth wife. He has never met her before. He has only seen her portrait – the portrait of a sweet, demure and innocent young woman. The impatient and lovesick king must see her before their marriage. But this rushed and unplanned rendezvous will shock them and the country both. It will also lead to some completely unexpected and fatal results.

In D. Lawrence-Young’s well-researched novel, we learn of the strong passions and the deadly politics when the romantic plans of a frustrated Tudor king go badly wrong.

my thoughts

Well written, well researched fictional account of Henry's luckiest wife. The Anne of this novel is a charming person. She led a rich and fulfilled life during a dangerous period in history. I enjoyed this book, it is full of wonderful historical figures. The writing flows and the book is easy to read.

Richard III

Written as a succinct, straightforward summary of the facts, this short handbook outlines how King Richard came to be portrayed as a monster-villain by the Tudors, and how a backlash in later centuries created the ‘Great Debate’ over his reputation, which still rages today. It also analyses the mystery of the ‘Princes in the Tower’, examining what people actually said and did at the time of their disappearance, and who profited from their removal.

The book sets out all the main theories and arguments, together with their strengths and weaknesses, in a non-scholarly style, without imposing judgements and conclusions. An invaluable reference resource, it invites readers to weigh up the evidence and make up their own minds.

Recommended for anyone interested in Richard III, for libraries and also as a reference for the media, A Small Guide sticks to the verifiable facts while offering insights you won't find in conventional history books.

"NOW IS THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT, MADE GLORIOUS SUMMER BY THIS SUN OF YORK"
-WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE   RICHARD III  1594

Richard III, King of England from June 1483- August 1485.  One of the most maligned characters in British history, thanks to the works of Shakespeare and others.  History is written by the victors.  Undoubtedly, The Tudor's were behind the vilification of Richard.

Annette Carson covers this in her "Small Guide". She tackles the debates of Richard usurping the throne from Edward V and the supposed 'killing of the Princes in the Tower".

Annette makes her opinions clear, her sympathies lie with Richard, but it doesn't interfere with her ability to clearly state the facts, even when not in Richard's favor.

This is a well researched, well written book that coincides with the archaeological excavation of Richard's remains, found in Leicester, England.  This book is easy to read and will hold your interest.  I have always had a love of English history, and read this book in a few hours.

Facts:
Richard III  October 2,1452- August 22, 1485
Last king from the Plantagenet dynasty.

Greer has always known she was privileged, though she had no idea how special her second sight made her, even among her triplet monster-fighting sisters. But when a god starts playing with her mind, can Greer step up in her pretty high heels to prevent anything from stopping her sisters’ mission?

Grace loves her adopted brother, Thane, but now that he’s back and has joined her sisters’ team, it’s clear his past is full of dark mysteries. She wants to trust him, but will Thane’s secret put the girls in even more danger?

Gretchen knows she can rely on her sisters to help her stop the monsters. But after getting to know some of the beasties in the abyss, she finds her role as a huntress comes with more responsibility than she ever imagined. How can she know what her birthright demands of her now?

The girls cannot hesitate as they seek the location of the lost door between the realms, even as monsters and gods descend on San Francisco in battle-ready droves. In this exciting conclusion to the Sweet Venom trilogy, these teenage heirs of Medusa must seek the truth, answer the ancient riddles, and claim their immortal legacy.

A mini excerpt from Gretchen

I place my hand around Nick’s wrist and—without waiting for him to respond—pull him after me. Seeking a better strategic position, I move up, over onto the nearest boulder. He follows right behind and I release my grip so I can move stealthily.

Belly-crawling across the smooth surface, I inch toward the edge of the rock, toward the sound that could be a million things. A million dark and nasties.

Whatever it is, I have to draw it away from my sisters.

As I lean forward, out over the edge to get a better view, I hold my breath. Surprise is a crucial advantage. Whatever is coming doesn’t know we’re here yet and I don’t want to give away our position until I’m ready.

I peer down, but can’t see anything in the inky space below. The shufflings stop. All but one. Then I hear a loud, Oof! Followed by a vehement, Shh!

“Sorry,“ a small voice says. “Not know we stopping.“

“Shhhh!“ Louder. And more irritated.

“If you no want Sillus—“

A loud smack, followed by an angry, “Shut. Up.“

Then a muffled, “Sorry,“ that sounds more like, “Rawry.“

I smile. Leaning out as far over the edge as possible, I can barely make out several shapes below in the faint glow. One gleams in the green light. Golden, metallic.

The golden maiden.
